"The use of Altair's low-cost algae-prevention treatment prevents the unsightly occurrence of visible black and green algae growth, eliminates filter fouling caused by biomass accumulation and avoids the use of chemical shock or algaecide treatments required if an algae bloom does occur," said Rudi Moerck, president of Altair Nanotechnologies. "With Altair's product there is no need to purchase expensive algaecides or costly electrolysis equipment often employed to prevent algae growth."

Altair plans to have the algae product on the market through a partner by late spring. The compound is insoluble in water and passes through conventional pool filtration systems. Altair is also looking into using the material to prevent algae growth in cooling towers and in commercial fish farming.
