Diatom after conversion
Diatom after reactive conversion into magnesium oxide. The numbers indicate fine features that were preserved after the reaction. The 'solidified Mg-Si liquid' is a byproduct of the conversion reaction, which, because of the high reaction temperature, leaves the microshell and sticks to the underlying metal substrate.
