Environmental risk assessment and fate models rely on detailed knowledge of SWCNT metal and amorphous carbon content. The report in Nanotechnology presents a first effort to provide such data and highlights ways to take advantage of distinct compositions to detect SWCNTs in environmental samples (e.g. air). The broad diversity in SWCNT character will require careful nanomaterial characterization for accurate risk modeling, toxicity assessment and fate predictions.
