The SIEBIMM test platform, showing a strained polymer film supported on a PDMS (silicone) sheet clamped between two supports. The iridescent colour is a result of diffraction from micrometre-scale periodic ridges. The picture does not show the laser, which goes below the stage, or the CCD, mounted above to capture the diffraction pattern.
