Laser light cleans up nanotubes
A growing number of applications require pure, defect-free carbon nanotubes but purifying these nanomaterials is notoriously difficult. Now, John Lehman of NIST and Roop Mahajan of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and colleagues have perfected an ingeniously simple method that blasts the nanotubes with a laser beam. The laser light removes the amorphous carbon-contaminating layer from the nanotubes, making this a quick, non-chemical cleaning technique.
