Luminescent particles highlight disease
Hydrogen peroxide is thought to be over-produced in many diseases that cause chronic inflammation, such as heart disease, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. Now, researchers in the US have developed the first technique that can detect and image trace amounts of this chemical in live animals using nanoparticles containing peroxalate esters and fluorescent dyes. The method could not only be used to diagnose diseases in their early stages but is also a powerful tool for understanding how hydrogen peroxide behaves inside the body.
