Buckling nanowires make mechanical memory

A new micromechanical device that works as a non-volatile memory has been designed by researchers in Japan. The device consists of a nanowire 100 nm thick clamped at both ends that is actuated by electrodes placed on each side of it. If optimized, it could be used as a memory in space and security applications and could even be an alternative to SRAMs.
