NEMS device gets active
Until now, nanomechanical resonators needed an external source to drive the devices into resonance and to keep them working, but a new self-sustaining oscillator powered only by a DC current has put an end to this problem. The advance will revolutionize miniature active oscillators for use in a variety of applications, including sensors, signal processors and even in nanoscale metrology as clocks.
