ADT is awarded the first phase of a 3-year, $4.8 million contract from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency to develop diamond-based biosensors for detection of water-based chemical & biological agents

ADT's nanostructured diamond, UNCD, will be used to make devices that are sensitive detectors of both chemical and biological agents. Diamonds form a stable and exceptionally strong bond with biomolecules in water whereas other materials immediately degrade and fail. ADT's expertise in the microfabrication of UNCD makes portable and reuseable sensors a reality. Smooth, electrically conductingdiamond film has many potential advantages for biosensors. By using MEMS technology, ADT miniaturizes the devices, which makes it economically feasible for people to carry a sensor, which would allow them to determine if water is safe to drink. In the case of military personnel or first responders, detectors could be integrated into uniforms or personal protective equipment.
